I love to garden. Can anyone suggest plants that will tolerate dense, often compacted soil?
I have mature bamboo stools that border a section of my property. The plants that are planted there have remained stunted. What can I do? There is a lot of space and potential for this area – PLEASE HELP!!!

The problem you are having has more to do with the bamboo than the soil. Bamboo is notorious for growing underground. This is how it spreads. The problem is with the far reaching root system of the bamboo. It is encroaching on your garden area, and competing for the water and nutrients your garden plants need to survive.
Dig a trench along the lot line and remove the roots. Install a barrier in the trench and refill. Aggressively remove any bamboo shoots and as many roots on your side of the barrier as possible.
This problem also happens with Raspberries. I buried a 1′ by 12′ length of vinyl siding for a barrier on my raspberries. It has worked well this year to keep out new raspberry growth past the barrier.
As for your clay soil, dig out at least a 1′ circle, and a foot deep for each plant. Break up the clay from the holes and add sand, or compost, or both, and mix well, Refill the holes with the mix, and replant. This will give them a fighting start.
