When looking for a rug, it is beneficial to decide whether or not you want it to be the room’s focus or not. If you do, you can choose one with a large oval design in the center. If you don’t, a busier pattern might work for you.
An ornate wall or room pattern calls for a lighter-colored rug with a simpler pattern. A rug like this will keep the room simpler, and will make it look more spacious.
For those who don’t like cleaning very much, a more ornate, darker pattern is a good idea. If someone spills a drink on a dark and detailed rug, it will probably not need to be scrubbed too hard. A more ornate pattern also makes the space look cozier.
When choosing an area rug, color should be taken into account. If the rug matches the color scheme of a room it will seem more integrated. While it is okay if it does not match perfectly, as a general rule of thumb one color (at least) should match.
Finally, area rugs can overpower a room or clash with each other. To avoid this, try to use rugs of different sizes if you want more than one, and match the size of the rug with the size of other furnishings.
