Can Rusty Wires/Fencing Hurt my Vegetables?
I am currently growing sugar snap peas in my garden and I strung up some wire between bamboo poles for them to attach to as they get taller, however since I put the wire up about a week ago I noticed that it is getting rusty. My peas haven’t quite reached the wire yet, but I need to know if I should find a new, no-rust wire or use some type of string instead. So – rusty wires – safe for peas to grow on or not?
it should be fine. a rusty surface may actually help the peas to grow on the wire because it makes it rough. if you don’t have a tetanus shot you should be careful not to cut yourself on the wire when you harvest (rust doesn’t cause tetanus but the bacteria that causes tetanus likes to grow on the surface of rusty metal). rust is just iron oxide which is also present in soil. It won’t hurt the peas and it won’t hurt you if you eat them but, as always, wash them before you eat them.
